Thermal cameras for fincas and unlit plots
The most reliable night-time detection where there is no lighting — and never will be. Plus the number almost nobody explains: detecting at 90 metres is not recognising at 90 metres.
Where it fits
Rural and inland
Long sight lines, no street lights, wildlife active at night. Thermal detects the presence; the visible channel and AI confirm what it is.
Large plots kept dark
Front-line properties without outdoor lighting by design or by rule: continuous surveillance without flooding the garden with light.
Bi-spectral
Thermal plus optics in one housing: the alert is born from heat, the evidence from the image. Both — or neither.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a thermal camera cost for a finca?
It depends on the resolution and optics the sight line calls for. It is sized with the recognition figure, not detection, and the fixed price comes after the visit.
At what distance does a thermal camera detect a person?
A typical 160×120 model detects a human presence at around 90 metres but only recognises it as a person at around 23. We design with the recognition figure.
Why not design with the detection figure?
Because “seeing something” at 90 m does not let you decide. The figure that determines whether the system is useful is recognition; quoting with detection gives you the wrong number.
Does a thermal camera work in total darkness?
Yes: it sees heat, not an image. It cannot be blinded by a torch and is not fooled by shadows or reflections. It is the most reliable night detection where there is no light.
Does it replace outdoor lighting?
On fincas with no light — and no intention of adding any — it is the alternative: it watches without flooding the garden with light. Where lighting is possible, an AI camera is usually more cost-effective.
Does thermal give an image to identify someone?
On its own, no: it gives a heat signature. That is why we install bi-spectral units, with thermal and a visible channel in one housing: thermal triggers, visible provides the evidence.
When is a thermal camera worth it at a home?
On large plots and fincas with long sight lines (above 60–80 m) and no lighting. On small or lightable plots it is spending without return.
Does summer heat affect it?
Professional units typically operate up to +50–+60 °C by model. What needs care is the installation: sun shields, orientation and materials, especially on a south-facing wall.
Does it detect animals at night?
It detects any heat source; whether it is a person or an animal is classified by the analytics on the visible channel or the thermal itself with AI.
What resolution do I need?
For home use, 160×120 is usually the cost/performance sweet spot on 0.1–3 ha plots; 384×288 for sight lines above 150 m. Higher resolution exceeds what a home needs.
Does thermal see through walls?
No: that is a myth. It sees the heat of surfaces, not through them. Behind a wall there is still a blind zone.
Does it work in rain and fog?
Better than an optical camera, but heavy rain and dense fog reduce the range. It is sized with margin for the site's real conditions.
Can it be combined with radar?
Yes, and it is a powerful pairing on a large finca: radar detects movement in the open volume and thermal covers the long, unlit sight lines.
Does it need special maintenance on the coast?
The same care as the rest: marine-grade bracket, fixings and cable glands on the front line. The weak point is never the optics, it is the anchoring.
Does thermal comply with data-protection law?
The visible channel does capture identifiable images and is configured under the LOPDGDD (angles, sign, retention); the thermal signature itself is less identifiable.
What does a thermal camera actually see?
Heat, not an image: the infrared radiation every body emits. It works in absolute darkness, cannot be blinded by a torch and is not fooled by shadows or reflections.
At what distance can it detect a person?
It depends on resolution and optics. A typical 160×120 model detects a human presence at around 90 metres — but only recognises it as a person at around 23. We always design with the recognition figure; if a quote argues with the detection figure, you are being sold the wrong number.
Does it replace normal cameras?
No — it complements them. We install bi-spectral units: thermal and a visible channel in one housing. The thermal side raises the alert; the visible side provides the image that serves as evidence.
When is it worth it at a private home?
On fincas and plots with long sight lines and no lighting — and no intention of adding any. On small or lightable plots it is money without return: a good AI camera with proper lighting solves it for less.
Does the Málaga summer heat affect it?
Professional units typically operate up to +50 to +60 °C depending on the model. What genuinely needs care is the installation: sun shields, orientation and the right materials — on a south-facing wall in full sun the margin runs out sooner.
Shall we talk about your home?
No-obligation technical visit anywhere in the province of Malaga. We work in English and Spanish.
