Perimeter security in La Zagaleta

Perimeter radar covers thousands of square metres from a single unit and is unaffected by rain, shadow or vegetation, because it measures movement in a volume, not an image. But that volume is not a perfect semicircle on a flat plane: a dense hedge, a low wall, the slope of the plot or a parked vehicle each cast a shadow where the radar cannot see.

That is why setting-out in La Zagaleta is not done on a cadastral drawing but by walking the plot. We mount the unit at the right height — around 3.5 m — and check with real walk-throughs where coverage begins and ends, where two objects closer than three metres merge into one, and which stretches need a second layer. That shadow map is what separates a system that truly warns from one that leaves a blind corridor along the wall.

The radar also classifies person, vehicle and unknown object, and filters small objects — a cat, a rabbit — and things that sway in the wind, such as a branch. That is the first sieve before the image confirms.

In this province the wild boar is no rural anecdote: it is documented inside the urban core. A study by the veterinary association distributed the sightings with Marbella at 40%, Málaga at 30%, Fuengirola at 22.5% and Benahavís at 7.5%. Add to that deer, foxes and, indoors, your own dog.

To a blind motion detector, all of that is an alarm. To a system with image classification, they are animals: recorded, not waking you. In La Zagaleta that is not a luxury, it is the requirement for the system to still be switched on after the first month.

The fine tuning — what size counts as a person, which zone is watched at night, what is ignored — is done on site, with the real wildlife of your plot, not with factory defaults.

Many modern systems depend on the cloud for the essentials: lose the internet and they stop detecting. On a La Zagaleta finca or villa, where power and network cuts are part of life, that is a design fault.

That is why the critical chain we install is local: detection, logic and siren live in the house itself and keep working without internet. The cloud is there to alert you and to let you see the image, not to decide. A power backup keeps the system up through outages, and the alert to your phone uses the mobile network, with a second path when the fixed line fails.

The result is a system that protects the same on the day everything works and the day the power, the fibre or both go down. Deterrence cannot depend on the router being on.

A camera that sees beyond your fence can become a legal problem instead of protection. Spanish data-protection rules (LOPDGDD, art. 22) are clear: a visible information sign, a frame limited to your property and access points, and image retention of one month at most unless required otherwise.

We treat this as part of the project, not as paperwork afterwards. We minimise the field of view to your plot, place the mandatory signage and set retention to the legal limit. In La Zagaleta, where many plots border the street or a neighbour, framing well from the start avoids the complaints that year after year rank among the most frequent before the data-protection agency.

Recording well is also recording within the law: an image obtained correctly is usable; one obtained by intruding on a neighbour can turn against you.

In most homes the intruder does not climb the highest wall; they come in where there is already a gap made for coming in: the vehicle gate, the service door, the gardener's or the pool access. These are the points legitimate people use every day, and precisely for that reason the worst-watched.

In La Zagaleta we treat those accesses as zones in their own right: detection that tells the expected passage from the one that is not, image verification of who arrives, and a record of every opening. The point is not to turn your home into a bunker, but to know who comes in when you are away, and to make sure an open service door is not an invisible hole.

Where there is domestic staff, maintenance or frequent deliveries, this is the layer that turns a normal flow of people into something traceable, with no friction for you.

A house protected as a single block can only say “something is happening”. A house divided into zones says “someone is on the north line, by the pool”, and that difference is what lets you decide in seconds instead of stepping out blind.

We divide the La Zagaleta plot into logical zones — perimeter, garden, access points, the immediate surround of the house — and each has its own rule: what is watched, at what hour, at what sensitivity. At night the outer perimeter can be armed while you move around inside; when away, everything. The same installation protects differently depending on the moment.

Zoning also narrows the alert: instead of one sensor tripping on everything, each zone reports separately, and the image tells you exactly where to look.

A good system is not judged by what it does at rest, but by what happens in the ten seconds after a real detection. The moment two layers agree there is a person where there should not be, the sequence starts: an alert to your phone with the image of that moment, a recording of the zone, and — if you choose — active deterrence with lighting and siren.

You get a photo, not an anonymous buzz: you see whether it is the courier, the gardener or someone you don't recognise, and act with judgement instead of panic. In La Zagaleta, where many homes are watched from a distance, that image is the difference between calling for nothing and calling with reason.

And the recording stays: an image obtained correctly, framed within your property, is usable evidence. The system does not just scare the intruder — it documents what happened.
